Gráfica Ilustrada del Uruguay (GIU) is a digital archive that seeks to share the Uruguayan graphic design focused on the period between 1950 and 1980 with a strong focus on illustration. As graphic designers and illustrators born in Uruguay, since we created the studio we are always very attracted to these works that have become a reference and obsession for us. Names like Carlos Palleiro, Horacio Añon and Ayax Barnes among many others, are a source of permanent inspiration for us.
The creative use of technological limitations, the influence of currents such as the design of Polish posters and the popularization of some formats such as music vinyl and small books are some of the ingredients that generate this large amount of powerful and original graphics.
We are interested in sharing and discovering this era where designers were called “cartoonists”, worked directly on the sheets, making the limitations a very powerful and recognizable language of their own. Despite the distances and the different communications of the time, several of these works were recognized at the time in specialized magazines from various parts of the world such as Graphis Annual or Novum.
Our intention with the archive is to investigate the evolution of Uruguayan graphic design during this period. We are also interested in showing the world of the names that began in this adventure without knowing the name of their job: Graphic Design.
